Café D'Afrique

$30.00

My first book 'Cafe d'Afrique' tells a story of a cultural restaurant in Lusaka, Zambia.

"A story about making friends not just with people, but with a country and its culture."

— The West Australian

"When Tineke Van der Eecken first arrives in Africa as part of an international aid program, she brings with her a mix of childhood dreams and Western preconceived ideas.

'I came to Africa in high heels,' she writes. But when she moves to Zambia, Tineke falls in love — in a completely new way — with the country and its culture. Now she dreams of setting up a 'cultural restaurant' where locals and tourists alike can sample authentic Zambian cuisine, music and dance. Her dream comes true, but can it last?

In the attempt to meet the expected challenges, Tineke must come through some unexpected tests and trials that take her not only beyond borders, but also past boundaries. She wonders if what matters may not be the success of her venture so much as the person she is becoming...

Set against a shifting backdrop of social, political and cultural life in Zambia, this part-memoir, part-travelogue, part-coming-of-age story is a celebration of friendship."

I acknowledge I write and work on stolen boodjar, of the Wadjuk people of the Noongar Nation and pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging. I also pay respect to all First Nations of land I have walked and worked on, and created work inspired by these places. As a migrant from Flanders, a country colonised many times and itself part of a colonising nation, Belgium, I am deeply saddened by, and sorry for the harm inflicted on indigenous people. My aim is to tread lightly, to learn and to not take away from First Nations’ people’s understanding and caring for country. Dit is gestolen land, dat toehoort aan de Wadjuk mensen van de Noongar natie. (Flemish, translated: This is stolen land, that belongs to the Wadjuk people of the Noongar Nation)
